Here's what I did:
  1. Bought the Collector's Edition for the headset.
  2. Took a spare PC (an old P200) and installed Debian plus necessary packages.
  3. Downloaded and installed the linux TS2 server on the P200.
  4. Configured the TS2 server (server name, users, etc.).
  5. Downloaded and installed the windows TS2 client to my desktop.
  6. Ran client, connected to my server, gave other guild members the IP address, voice chat city.
Probably took me 2-3 hours on one evening. Most of that was just doing something else while updated packages were downloaded. Works great.

Alternately, if you're not into setting up your own server, you can log in on someone else's server for free or for pay. Someone posted a thread about offering free TS server channels a few days ago (search for it). Might check out GameDaemons...last time I checked I think you could get a dedicated TS server for $5/month if you prepaid for a year.

You only hear the people who are in the same channel as you.

Typically you hook up with specific people using a particular teamspeak server - you would get the server information (address, account name and password) and log into the server. When logged in, you pick a channel to join and then you can talk to the other people in that channel.

It's not a free for all like general chat in Lion's Arch - ew!

As for how you speak, usually you set up Teamspeak to map a particular key to the "speak" key so that when you push it down you can talk. When you let go of that key, you're not talking, you're listening. I have my ALT key mapped to talk, fyi.

Just to clarify, Teamspeak knows nothing about the game you're playing, and is completely seperate. When you join a party somebody may offer up a TS server for use, and everyone who has a working mic joins up. You'll also see people using Ventrillo which works about as well, although I'm sure there are people who will argue endlessly about which one is better.
